The BC Phil Annual Review of 1938

1938 Annual Review, published by BC Philatelic Society In 1938, for at least the second year in a row, the BC Phil published an Annual Review, a document that today would be the envy of any stamp club.

The 1937 issue was an impressive 28-page booklet with a two-color cover* containing some 30 display advertisements and six philatelic articles. In 1938, the Society used the same cover design (click the image to see a larger version), and pulled all the stops to produce a truly impressive publication. It contained 64 pages, 66 paid advertisements, a foreword by the Honourable J.C. Elliott, D.C.L., K.C., M.P., Postmaster General of Canada; a photograph of His Honour, Lieutenant-Governor Eric W. Hamber, Honorary Patron of the BC Phil, and 19 philatelic articles, most of them written by Society members and most of them illustrated with high-quality photographic images or drawings.

The editor of the booklet notes that the “ambition” of the Society had paid off in membership that had trebled in only one year. In both 1937 and 1938, the President was W.C. Mainwaring.

* In 2003, the Society hired a graphic artist to scan the cover of the Review to turn it into a logo that we could use in our publications (including these web pages), and on stationery and other promotional items. One popular item, which is still available, is the coffee mug at the right.
