NEW!
Still available from our very successful Vanpex 2009 exhibition and bourse (Sept. 25-26), two event covers and one maximum card dedicated to the show theme, "Honouring the field of Aerophilately on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada".
Each of these items includes a copy of the 1959 "First Flight in Canada" stamp, which features the Silver Dart flown by John Alexander Douglas McCurdy, on Feb. 23, 1909, as well as three images of a jet fighter in silhouette which looks like the famous Avro Arrow (but which Canada Post insists is a generic design).
The back of each cover includes historical information about McCurdy's flight and the Arrow.
Limited quantities of these items, designed and produced by BC Phil member Derren Carman, are available for purchase at Society meetings or by mail. Download and print our order form.
- The Regional Philatelic Directory, published by retired postmaster Bill Bartlett of Saanichton, on Vancouver Island, is a comprehensive listing of stamp exhibitions, bourses, clubs, and philatelic outlets in the British Columbia's Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
- Canadian Philately — An Outline: A Summary of Collecting Areas and Interests of British North America Collectors, by John Burnett, Gray Scrimgeour, and Victor Willson.
This excellent overview of BNA philately is made available courtesy of the British North America Philatelic Society Ltd. and its authors.
NOTE: This file is far too large — 12.5 Mb — for use with a dial-up modem. If you have a dial-up modem, use the following links to download the chapters in smaller chunks:
- Chapters 1-5
- Chapters 6-10
- Chapters 11-16
- Chapters 17-22
- MIKE'S ADVENTURES IN EUROPE — In the spring of 2008, BC Phil member Mike Strachan undertook a solo adventure in Europe, travelling by train, car, and foot on the same trails taken by
his father's and uncle's Canadian armoured regiments from D-Day in France through the end of the war in Germany.
Mike kept a meticulous journal along the way; now you can read "Mike's Adventures in Europe" in entirety.
- New members receive a bonus for joining us — a $5 voucher good for any BC Phil auction.
(Our club holds a regular auction on the third Wednesday of each month, September through June; donation auctions in months when five meetings are scheduled, and a summer auction every July. See our schedule for upcoming auctions.)
Thanks to BC Phil Treasurer Derren Carman for designing and printing the new vouchers.
- A list of the library holdings of the BC Philatelic Society, in PDF format. Copies are also available at meetings.
-
“BC Phil Exhibitions”: Data about stamp shows in Vancouver since 1925, compiled by BC Phil Archivist Eric Ranger. It seems that funding has presented problems to show organizers in the past, and stamp shows have been an on-again off-again activity.
- The annual President’s Report, presented at the Society’s annual general meeting on March 11, 2009.
- An article, "What to do when you inherit stamps," by Bob Ingraham, Immediate Past President of the BC Philatelic Society. If a relative or friend has bequeathed a stamp collection to you, or if you found one in a dumpster, you probably want to know what it’s worth and what to do with it.
